It was, in fact, the UPA government that in the past few years had decided that Air India should remain a national carrier and that the government should infuse funds into the beleaguered airline to save it from collapse.Meanwhile, Mr Singh also indicated that his ministry will move a Cabinet note for certain changes to the rule that a domestic carrier needs five years of flight operations and a fleet of 20 aircraft before permission is given for it to fly abroad.
In any case, even in the UPA-2 government, any move to privatise Air India will need the strong endorsement of the Congress that leads the UPA.After next year’s Lok Sabha elections, it remains to be seen whether the government formed then supports privatisation..Civil aviation minister Ajit Singh assertion on possible privatisation of Air India may be difficult to translate into action, given that just about seven months China Pneumatic Valve Suppliers remain in the current tenure of UPA-2 government at the Centre. Mr Singh suggested that the framing of this rule (that was put in place many years ago) may have been on account of some "manipulation" back then but did not elaborate.
